2008 Staff Survey now available!

2008 Accomplishments of the Council:

  • 2008 Staff Advisor.

  • Hosted the 2nd annual “Staff Development Day” on May 13, 2008. In addition to the myriad of workshops, the day included a luncheon and plenary address by Melanie McClain-Brown entitled “Sought After and Memorable”.

  • Launched the “Bulldog Award” a new award for Team Excellence in Customer Service. The award was presented to the University Career Center, Center for Student Involvement.

  • Revitalized the “Points of Excellence Award” to commend staff members for excellence in any of the following areas: service to students, innovation, diversity, community service, customer service, exemplifying Truman values, work performance. The award was given to Howard Worcester, Greg Marshall, Harold Reeves, Glen Ketterlinus, and Lois Dover.

  • Sponsored two faculty/staff blood drives on campus.

  • Developed a new “Head to Toe” winter clothing wear collection drive and donated all the collected hats, scarves, mittens and coats to local schools.

  • Hosted a series of lunches for new employees.

  • Fielded the only non-student team for the Homecoming Chili Cook-off competition.

  • Supported the Phi Kappa Phi book drive.

  • Members served on a variety of committees and as sponsors for several organizations.

  • Encouraged participation in the Foundation’s Faculty/Staff Campaign.

  • Supported the work of Fox-Lawson and Associates for the Classification and Compensation Study.

  • Actively participated in both University Conference Day and the Strategic Planning and Assessment Workshops.

  • Hosted a “Paint Pershing Purple” day during basketball season.

  • Created and distributed welcome bags to new staff members.

  • Continued involvement with Student Senate and Faculty Senate via attendance at meetings and input on initiatives.

  • Created and distributed the Biennial Staff Survey with the results share online and with the President.

  • Presented at overview of Staff Council at Employee Orientation during Fall 07 and Spring 08.

  • Assisted with organizing the Annual Service Recognition Program.

  • Held elections for new council members and leadership roles with Linda Davenport elected to serve as Chairperson and Janice Weddle elected to serve as Vice-Chairperson. The following members will serve as committee chairs: Barbara Smith-Mandell, Policies; Laura Thrasher, Staff Development and Recognition; Melissa Rodman, University and Community Relations.

  • Met regularly with President Dixon to share council activities and staff concerns and ideas.

2007 Accomplishments of the Council:

  • 2007 Staff Advisor.

  • Truman Wellness Program Campus Fitness Routes Brochure.

  • Drafted a proposal for a Sick Leave Bank.

  • Established four standing committees:  Policies, Spirit, Staff Development and Recognition, and University and Community Relations.

  • Recruited members for each standing committee, including 25 staff members who are not members of the Council.  As a result, 12% of Truman staff members are now involved in Staff Council service.

  • Staff Council Chair met regularly with the University President.

  • Hosted five open forums for staff members to meet with President Dixon during December, 2004, January, 2005, and February, 2005.  Four of these forums were specific to assignment area, and one was open to all staff.  Approximately 175 staff members attended one of these forums.

  • Attended Student Senate Vision Outreach Dinner to promote community with faculty and students.

  • Sponsored a "Working Together" reception, to which members of the Faculty Senate, Student Senate, and other student leadership organizations were invited.  This reception focused on identifying opportunities to work together as a community on common goals.

  • Set up Staff Council web site to share Staff Council information with the University community.

  • Appointed a staff representative to the ITS Strategic Planning Committee.

  • Appointed six staff members to serve as J-Board representatives with the Office of Citizenship and Community Standards.

  • Recruited volunteers to serve as a staff representative on the ITAC Committee.

  • Provided a representative on the University Conference Planning Committee, and helped ensure that several sessions applicable to University staff were offered.

  • Sponsored a Staff Council session at the University Conference to update staff members on Staff Council activities and solicit feedback.

  • Encouraged participation in the Faculty/Staff Campaign.

  • Worked with Director of Human Resources to develop a leadership series for supervisors.

  • Staff Council Chair presented members with a report on the staff evaluation of the University President.

  • Staff Council Chair or Vice-Chair attended each Board of Governors meeting, and provided a report to each Staff Council member following the meeting.  These reports are circulated to the individuals in each Staff Council members' assignment area/job classification.

  • Promoted school spirit by proclaiming the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month as "Purple Fridays", on which staff members are encouraged to wear purple clothes as part of their regular, professional dress, to show their support for the institution.

  • Encouraged staff participation in the Paint Pershing Purple Spirit Event in February, 2005.

  • Passed a resolution requesting paid time off to participate in on-campus blood drives (for those who work during the hours of the blood drive).

  • Encouraged attendance at the Higher Learning Commission Open Session for staff during the University's accreditation visit.

  • Staff Council Chair attended the Higher Learning Commission accreditation team closing meeting, and provided a report to each Staff Council member following the meeting.  This report was circulated to the individuals in each Staff Council members' assignment area/job classification.

  • Investigated the possibility of changes to the 2006 staff holiday calendar.

  • Organized a Truman staff team for Kirksville's Relay for Life.

  • Provided input on staff/professional development and recognition programs.

  • Worked with the Center for Student Involvement to identify if there was a need for additional staff members to serve as advisors for campus organizations.

  • Voted to sponsor two faculty/staff blood drives each year for the American Red Cross.
